University of Nottingham researchers are testing a four-legged robot that can inspect plants and spot signs of disease, pests and poor growth before problems spread.

NOTTINGHAM, England — A robot dog is taking on a new role inside greenhouses, walking between rows of crops and using onboard technology to monitor plant health.

The system is being tested at the University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington Campus, where researchers are exploring how autonomous robots could help growers detect problems earlier and reduce crop losses.

The robot can move through greenhouse environments while collecting information about plants. Its cameras and sensors allow researchers to examine crops for changes that may indicate disease, pest damage or abnormal growth.

Early detection is particularly important in controlled growing environments. A problem affecting a small number of plants can spread rapidly if it is not identified and treated, potentially damaging an entire crop.

The project reflects a broader push to bring robotics and artificial intelligence into agriculture. Rather than relying solely on human workers to inspect plants manually, autonomous machines could carry out repetitive monitoring tasks and provide growers with more detailed information about crop conditions.

Reporting for BBC Tech Now, Paul Carter visited the University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington Campus to see the robot dog in operation and examine how the technology is being developed for greenhouse agriculture.

Researchers say robotic monitoring could eventually give farmers and growers a faster way to identify emerging problems and respond before they become widespread.

The technology does not replace agricultural expertise. Instead, its potential lies in continuously gathering data and highlighting plants that may require closer examination by growers or specialists.

As agriculture faces pressure to produce more food while using resources more efficiently, robotic systems such as the greenhouse patrol dog could become an increasingly important tool for precision farming.
