Riyadh says the drone was intercepted before entering Mecca’s restricted airspace, while the Houthis call the accusation a “lie” as regional tensions escalate.

MECCA, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia has accused Yemen’s Houthi movement of launching a drone toward the holy city of Mecca, deepening tensions between Riyadh and the Iran-aligned group. The Houthis, however, have rejected the allegation and denied targeting the city.

Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed the drone south of Mecca at around 6:50 p.m. local time on Tuesday, September 15, before it entered the restricted airspace surrounding the holy city, according to Saudi military authorities. Debris from the drone reportedly fell south of Mecca.

Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki said the drone was launched by the Houthis and described the incident as a serious threat to the security of the holy sites.

“The Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone launched by the Houthi terrorist militia before it entered the prohibited airspace of the Holy City of Makkah Al-Mukarramah,” Al-Maliki said in a statement posted on X.

Al-Maliki also characterized the incident as the second time the Houthis had allegedly attempted to target Mecca, referring to a ballistic missile launch toward the city in 2017. He said the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims constituted a “red line” for Saudi Arabia.

The Houthi leadership rejected the Saudi account. Hezam Al-Asad, a senior member of the group’s Supreme Political Council, said the allegation was unfounded.

“Claims of targeting Mecca are a nauseating lie that has been consumed before and no longer fools anyone,” Al-Asad said in a statement.

The competing accounts leave the precise origin and intended target of the drone disputed. Saudi Arabia attributes the launch to the Houthis, while the group denies responsibility.

The incident came one day after Saudi authorities issued emergency alerts warning of a potential threat in Mecca, Jeddah and Taif. Residents were instructed to seek shelter indoors and follow official safety instructions. The warnings were later lifted after authorities determined that the immediate danger had passed.

The alerts followed a series of missile and drone attacks that Saudi authorities attributed to the Houthis. Saudi officials said 13 people were injured in attacks on Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif, while several homes and vehicles were damaged.

The escalation comes as fighting between Saudi-backed forces and the Houthis has intensified in Yemen and expanded into a broader regional confrontation. Recent Houthi advances along Yemen’s Red Sea coast have also raised concerns over maritime routes and the security of energy infrastructure. Reuters reported that the group has made significant territorial gains near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The latest confrontation also highlights the growing pressure on Riyadh as it attempts to protect major population centers, energy infrastructure and vital shipping routes amid the wider Middle East conflict.

For now, the central allegation remains contested: Saudi Arabia says a Houthi drone was intercepted on its way toward Mecca, while the Houthis categorically deny launching it or targeting the holy city.
